VELA NEGRA
Preserving the Stories of the Afro-Caribbean Through Scent, Design, and Ritual.
Every culture carries its history in ways both visible and unseen: In recipes passed between generations, in songs remembered by heart, in the fragrance of incense before prayer, in the warmth of brown sugar melting into coffee, and in stories told around kitchen tables long after the meal has ended.
These moments are rarely found in archives, yet they shape who we are. VELA NEGRA was created to honor them.
We believe fragrance has the remarkable ability to preserve memory—not by recreating the past, but by inviting us to experience it in the present. Each candle begins not with a trend or a season, but with a place, a ritual, or a story rooted in the rich Afro-Caribbean cultural traditions.
Through our monthly Editions and Founding Collection, VELA NEGRA creates objects that encourage reflection, gathering, and remembrance. Together, they form a living archive—one fragrance at a time.
The Founder
My life has always been shaped by stories.
As a scholar, writer, educator, and entrepreneur, I have devoted my career to exploring the histories, visual cultures, and lived experiences of the Afro-Caribbean. My research has taken me into archives, museums, neighborhoods, and conversations that reveal how memory survives across generations—not only in documents, but in everyday rituals, creative expression, and community.
VELA NEGRA emerged from that same curiosity.
It is another way of asking the questions that have guided my work for years:
How do we remember?
What do we preserve?
What stories deserve to be carried forward?
For me, fragrance became an unexpected archive. A single scent can transport us across continents, back to childhood kitchens, sacred ceremonies, family celebrations, or moments we believed had long since faded. It reminds us that memory is not only something we study—it is something we experience.
Born from my Cuban and Guyanese heritage, VELA NEGRA reflects a lifelong commitment to honoring the beauty, complexity, and resilience of the Black diaspora through objects designed to be lived with, shared, and remembered.
Our Philosophy
We believe luxury is not defined by excess. It is defined by intention, craftsmanship, time, and meaning.
Every Edition is researched with care. Every fragrance tells a story. Every object is created to become part of your home and, we hope, part of your own traditions.
We are not simply making candles. We are building a cultural house devoted to preserving memory through scent, design, and ritual.
Thank you for becoming part of that story.
Welcome to VELA NEGRA.
